New Delhi: People around the world follow various religions, with Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism having the largest number of adherents. Christianity and Islam, in particular, have a strong presence across continents such as Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. Christianity is dominant in Europe and America, while Islam is the majority religion in parts of Asia and Africa. Hinduism, on the other hand, is primarily centered in India. In Nepal, there are people who follow Sanatan Dharma. Apart from these, Hindu populations in other countries are relatively small. Over the years, the number of followers of almost all religions has increased, with only a few exceptions.
Pew Research Center, in its report, highlighted that the global religious profile is continuously changing. Released in 2015, the report projects trends up to the year 2050. Factors such as fertility rates and the proportion of young people in major religions are influencing religion-based population changes. Additionally, people are frequently changing their religion, which is also impacting the population of different faiths.
According to the report, in the coming decades, Christianity will remain the most widely followed religion, but the Muslim population will grow at the fastest rate. If this trend continues, the number of Muslims will equal that of Christians by 2050. As a result, Islam will have a dominant presence worldwide.
According to a Pew Research report, India will witness a significant rise in the Muslim population by the year 2050. India will surpass Indonesia and have the world’s largest Muslim population. The report also states that India will remain a stronghold of Hinduism, with the Hindu population continuing to grow over the next 25 years. Additionally, it mentions that the number of Buddhists worldwide is likely to remain unchanged.
