Russia's state-run new agency, Interfax, confirmed that Moscow has signed the first deal for importing the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet. However, Russia has not disclosed the name of the buyer country.

Russia recently showcased its Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter jet at the Zhuhai Air Show in China, impressing potential buyers and aviation enthusiasts with its spectacular acrobatics. Following the showcase, the Su-57, Russia’s most advanced fighter plane, found its first buyer, with state-owned arms manufacturer Rosoboronexport announcing that it has received the first order for warplane.

Russia’s state-run new agency, Interfax, confirmed that Moscow has signed the first deal for importing the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet. However, Russia has not disclosed the name of the country who is purchasing its latest fighter jet, fueling speculation about who the buyer is. Names of countries like India, to African nations, have been thrown around as experts try to figure out the mysterious buyer of Su-57.

“Military technology systems should bring new types of weapons and military equipment to the market. As far as Sukhoi-57 is concerned, we have already signed a deal for this aircraft,” Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheev stated, without disclosing name of the buyer.

While some analysts believe that Mikheev’s statement is a confirmation about the deal being signed, others remain skeptical and claim that this could be a propaganda move by Russia to hype the Su-57’s combat capabilities.

Su-57 dazzles at Zhuhai Air Show

The Sukhoi Su-57 recently took part in the Zhuhai Air Show in China where its dazzled spectators with its impressive aerial stunts. The Su-57’s stunning acrobatics and aerial maneuvering capabilities were on full display at the air show, and videos of its performance went viral on social media sites.

How Su-57 can tip the scales in Africa?

Following Alexander Mikheev’s statement, experts believe that Rosoboronexport had finalized the Su-57 deal with the secret buyer, months ahead of the Zhuhai Air Show. In 2021, Mikheev had revealed that he was in touch with five countries as potential buyers for the Su-57 fighter, which at the time, were believed to India, Algeria, Vietnam and Turkey– all with friendly ties to Russia.

Amidst the speculations, there are unconfirmed reports that Algeria has signed the first deal with Russia for the Sukhoi-57, however, the African nation has confirmed these reports.

Analysts believe the Algeria can tip the power balance in the entire region and significantly increase its influence, its it acquires the Su-57 fighter jets.

Meanwhile, military experts believe that the Su-57 will also prove to be a major boost for Russia and its arms manufacturers, which have been crippled by US sanctions since the outbreak of the Ukraine war. This deal could just be the shot in the arm Russia’s weapons industry need as the Russia-Ukraine war rages on.
