Experts point out that China’s main hurdle is the extremely high cost of raising a child. A 2024 study by the Beijing-based Youth Population Research Institute estimates that bringing up a child until the age of 18 costs about 5.38 lakh yuan (around 76,000 dollars), making China one of the most expensive places in the world for child-rearing.
