Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has prepared a big plan amid the chaos in Syria after Bashar al-Assad fled the country. According to the Wall Street Journal report, Turkey and its supported militias are preparing for a major attack on the area controlled by Kurdish forces in Syria. When Syrian rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) began advancing on Damascus earlier this month, Turkey opened a front against the Kurds with its sponsored militia.
Turkey-backed forces carry out attacks
After Assad’s ouster, the Islamist group HTS, along with Turkey and the Ankara-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), has launched offensive operations against the Kurds in at least three locations. Meanwhile, the top commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has warned that the country could move towards another round of bloody civil war if the Turkish and HTS alliance continues their attacks.
Turkey and United States
Turkey’s possible action in Syria has increased the concern of the United States. Syria’s Kurdish forces are backed by the United States and are Washington’s main ally in the war against the Islamic State. However, Turkish President Erdogan considers the Kurds to be enemies. Turkey compares the SDF with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The PKK is designated a terrorist organization in Turkey and is blamed for the uprising inside Turkey.

Erdogan’s plan in Syria
Erdogan’s military has been carrying out attacks in Syria for years with the intention of pushing the Kurds away from the Turkish border. Now Turkey is preparing for major action against the Kurds.
In the latest update, U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal that Turkey had mobilized its proxy militia, along with commandos and artillery, to prepare for a major incursion into the border of Syria’s Kurdish region. The U.S. official said Turkish operations across the border could begin soon.
Kurds’ genocide fear
Earlier on Monday, December 16, there were reports of Turkey breaking the ceasefire with the Kurds under the mediation of the US. Fox News quoted an official from the Kurdish force SDF as saying that Turkey has informed the Kurds that the ceasefire has ended and that the Kurds are formally entering a state of war. Meanwhile, the Kurdish community fears ethnic cleansing.
