Dhaka, August 27: On Saturday morning Bangladesh police officials stormed a militant hideout few kilometres away from Dhaka, where three ‘terrorists’ have been shot dead, including Canadian-Bangladeshi Tamim Ahmed Chaudhary who had returned to his country three years ago. According to reports, the deceased was ‘mastermind’ behind the Gulshan cafe attack that took place in July. Tamim had been hiding there and had financed efforts to radicalise young Muslims.

Earlier reports suggested that Tamim used to visit the Kallyanpur militants in their hideout. There he held meetings with militants to inspire them and provide financial support for their terrorist activities. (Also Read: Dhaka cafe attack masterminds will be nabbed soon: Minister)

Five armed teenagers who were reportedly attached to Islamic State (ISIS) stormed an upscale cafe in Dhaka’s Gulshan neighbourhood on July 1 and killed 20 hostages, including 18 foreigners. The attack is said to be one of the Bangladesh’s deadliest single militant attack in last few years.

The deadly siege caught the attention of world leaders and few hours after five terrorists were shot dead and one was arrested, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. The gunmen were also pictured posing with ISIS flags in the images posted on a website affiliated with the group.

However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government had said that the attack was carried out by a homegrown Islamist group. In last few years many foreigners, activists and members of minority religious groups have been killed by radical fundamentalists in Bangladesh. In Dhaka cafe attack many victims were hacked to death with makeshift machetes.
