Trump Gaza Peace Plan: US President Donald Trump recently unveiled a 20-point proposal to end the war in Gaza, however, questions have been raised whether Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deliberately crafted a plan which Hamas would find unacceptable, allowing Israel to use it as a pretext for implementing its Gaza evacuation plan.

Hamas has indicated it may reject Trump’s peace plan, even as the US President has warned the Palestinian armed group of dire consequences.

Israel ‘tightens’ Gaza siege

Meanwhile, amid Trump’s Gaza peace proposal, Israel has rapidly imposed a blockade in the Palestinian city, with Defense Minister Israel Katz stating that Israeli troops are “tightening the siege” in the war-torn area to intensify the military campaign against Hamas. Katz said that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) plan to encircle Hamas in the Gaza Strip, cutting it off from the rest of the region.

The Israeli defense minister said his troops have extended the Netzarim Corridor– a military route stretching from east to west of Gaza– to the Mediterranean Sea, to completely cut off Gaza City. Katz warned that those exiting towards the south will have to pass through IDF checkpoints and anyone who fails to vacate the area will be considered a Hamas terrorist or its supports, and will be liable for lethal action.

Israel’s siege of Gaza has worsened the humanitarian crisis in the battle-ravaged city, which Israel claims as the “last stronghold” of Hamas.

Why Hamas may reject Trump Gaza peace plan?

According to a senior Hamas official, they have serious concerns about Trump’s Gaza plan, including requiring the group to lay down arms, destroy its weapons’ stockpiles, and accept the deployment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) inside the Palestinian city, BBC reported.

While Hamas has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s proposal, Israel has accepted the plan. Trump warned Hamas that they have only “three or four days” to agree, or face a “very sad end.” The Palestinian group has expressed willingness to discuss select provisions in the plan, but vehemently rejects any disarmament demands without guarantees of an independent Palestinian state.

What is Trump’s Gaza peace plan?

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, US President Donald Trump unveiled a 20-point plan to end the Israel-Gaza war, under which Gaza Strip is to be temporarily governed by a Palestinian technocratic government, with no role for Hamas, and Israel will not annex Gaza, Al Jazeera reported.

The plan mandates Hamas to release all Israeli hostages and return the mortal remains of 20 others who are presumed dead. Adam Boehler, the US presidential envoy for captive affairs, has asked Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal to accept the 20-point plan put forward by Trump, describing it as a deal where “everyone wins”.

Trump’s plan also calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip followed by a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from the region, and complete disarmament of Hamas.

Notably, hours after the peace plan was announced, Netanyahu declared that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will not withdraw from Gaza, and Tel Aviv would not recognize Palestinian statehood under any condition.
