Washington: In a major development, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can now deport immigrants to a third country with just six hours’ notice, indicating Donald Trump’s tougher stance on immigrants. Until now, ICE was required to wait at least 24 hours after notifying immigrants of their deportation to a third country. The memorandum was issued by acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. Clearly, the new policy is aimed at accelerating the deportation process to countries around the world by the Trump administration.

According to the American media, ICE can now deport migrants to countries other than their own with just six hours’ notice. This deportation to third countries can take place even if the migrants have not been assured any protection from those nations.

Court decision paves the way

To recall, in June this year, the US Supreme Court overturned a lower court’s order, clearing the way for the Trump administration to resume the deportations. The lower court had halted expulsions in cases where migrants feared persecution in a third country. It is important to note that the Donald Trump administration deported eight migrants from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, Sudan, and Vietnam to South Sudan after the court’s order.

According to the Trump administration, this policy helps in swiftly removing those who should not be allowed to stay in the United States. Under this policy, individuals with criminal records can be deported immediately. However, many experts are calling it a cruel policy, as people could be sent back to countries where they may face violence.

Questions Raised on the Policy

Trina Realmuto, a lawyer representing a group of migrants challenging the Trump administration’s deportation-to-third-countries policy in court, said that the new policy falls far short of providing the legal and due process protections required by law.

“People should not be sent to countries where they do not know the language and may face persecution,” she stated.
