Quito, [Ecuador], Aug 16: Twenty-four people were killed while 22 were injured in a tour bus accident in Ecuador on Tuesday. The government on Wednesday confirmed that 19 people who died in the bus crash just outside Quito were Colombians while the remaining were from Venezuela, stated the authorities from Ecuador on Tuesday.

So far, five victims have been identified. Colombia’s Attorney General’s office said in a statement, “Once all the bodies have been identified” they will be returned to Colombia. The foreign ministry stated that another 12 of the injured people were Colombians who were reported as “out of danger.”

The bus, which had foreign license plates, overturned and crashed into three houses after a collision with an all-terrain vehicle. Of the four Ecuadorians, including three children, who travelled in the all-terrain vehicle, three were reported to be dead. According to Colombia’s Transport Ministry’s statement on Tuesday, the bus was not authorized to carry tourists.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in Ecuador. According to the watchdog group Justicia Vial, on average seven people are killed and some 80 people injured each day in traffic accidents. And 96 per cent of those accidents is due to human error, according to the group’s figures. On Sunday, 12 people were killed and 30 injured when a bus carrying fans of Barcelona SC, Ecuador’s most popular football club based in Guayaquil, ran off the highway and flipped. (With Agency Inputs)
