Cairo (Egypt): An Egyptian woman was on Sunday arrested for speaking up about her sexual harassment in a video on Facebook. The video was posted in early May in which the victim described how she was sexually harassed at a bank and accused the government of not doing enough to curb the issue. Soon after the video circulated and got viral in parts of Egypt, some police officials arrived at the victim’s house and arrested her. She has since then spent more than 140 days at the prison. Some reports said that allegations that she belongs to a terrorist group have also started circulating. Her husband cried injustice and said that he has provided all the evidence to prove that his wife didn’t spread the false news. “When a woman is subjected to sexual harassment and gets sentenced to two years and fined, then this means we are telling all Egyptian women ‘shut your mouths…if you don’t want to go to prison’,” he said. Amnesty International, in a statement, slammed the Egyptian government saying that instead of prosecuting perpetrators of violence against woman, the authorities arrested the sexual harassment victim. Terming the arrest as a shocking case of injustice, Amnesty demanded the authorities to release and drop the charges against her.
