New Delhi: Elon Musk has once again claimed the title of the world’s richest person. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison on Wednesday had surpassed him, but the story changed within just a few hours. After that, Musk returned to the top spot. To recall, the Tesla boss first became the world’s richest person in 2021. Since then, he has managed to retain this title for extended periods. In 2021, LVMH’s Bernard Arnault and in 2024, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos surpassed him.

However, Musk regained the title last year and held it for over 300 days. Later, on Wednesday, due to rising demand for infrastructure services, Oracle’s shares saw a sharp surge. As a result, Oracle’s co-founder Larry Ellison briefly overtook Musk for a few hours.

Here are some of the details:

  • Following Oracle’s earnings report on Tuesday evening, Ellison’s total net worth rose by $8.9 billion to $383.2 billion.
  • Ellison, at one point, wealth had reached $410.1 billion, marking the largest single-day gain ever on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
  • As Oracle’s largest individual shareholder, Ellison briefly surpassed Musk as the world’s richest person due to this increase.
  • By the close of trading on Wednesday, however, Musk regained the top spot with a total net worth of $384.2 billion, just $1 billion more than Ellison.

Oracle witnesses 43 percent surge in shares

On Wednesday, Oracle’s shares jumped as much as 43 percent. They eventually closed with a 36 percent gain — the biggest single-day rise since 1992. The stock’s performance was driven by strong earnings and upbeat forecasts related to AI demand. Oracle’s market value soared by about USD 244 billion to nearly USD 922 billion. The company also climbed in the S&P 500 rankings, moving from the 13th most valuable company to the 10th.
