Dhaka had requested a bilateral meeting between Yunus and Macron during the conference but the French government rejected the proposal.

French President Emmanuel Macron has given a big blow to Bangladesh’s interim government head Muhammad Yunus. Macron has by refusing to hold a bilateral meeting with him which was expected to take place during the United Nations Ocean Conference to be held this month. Yunus had to go to France to attend this conference.

Dhaka had requested a bilateral meeting between Yunus and Macron during the conference but the French government rejected the proposal. This decision of the French government has dealt a blow to Yunus’ efforts to make his mark at the global level.

Yunus’ visit to France has been cancelled after his refusal to meet with Macron. This international conference is to be held in Nice, France from June 9. The French President will host a dinner for the participants on June 8. Yunus was also invited for this. Dhaka sources said that after receiving the invitation from France, a lot of efforts were made to organize a bilateral meeting between Macron and Yunus. On this, Paris replied that many countries participating in the conference have already requested a bilateral meeting. In such a situation, any other bilateral meeting i.e. Macron’s meeting with Yunus has not been possible.

France has said that it does not want to link bilateral meetings with the Nice conference. France has said that it wants Yunus to attend the conference. Yunus is desperate to meet world leaders to garner support for his government. In such a situation, he was trying to meet Macron so that he could send a message to the world.

Sources have indicated that France wanted to understand the desired outcome of the bilateral meeting. It did not want a meeting just for the sake of a message. Bangladesh had earlier shown interest in purchasing civilian aircraft from France, but there has been no progress on this. Hence, Macron decided to take this step.
