Paris: France has delivered a major blow to Greece by making it clear that it will not obstruct the sale of Meteor air-to-air missiles to Turkey. It is important to note that India shares a very good relationship with Greece. Earlier, Greece had openly objected to providing these missiles to Turkey, yet France has refused to halt the deal. In Athens, this is being seen as a betrayal by a key European ally. French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu directly addressed this issue during a parliamentary session.

Lecornu informed the parliament that Paris does not have the authority to block this deal. He clarified that this is not France’s fight. He said, “It is true that Greece had asked France to stop the sale of Meteor missiles to Turkey, but this is beyond the jurisdiction of President Emmanuel Macron’s government.”

Why Did France Not Block the Deal?

According to the minister, France does not control the export of British weapons, which distanced Paris from this deal. Lecornu further stated, “We are not selling this platform to Turkey.” He reiterated France’s stance that diplomacy is the only path for Turkey, not intervention.

Why is France not intervening?

Bulgaria Military.com reported that the reason behind France’s non-intervention lies in the complex web of international arms manufacturing and export regulations. The Meteor missile is a state-of-the-art air-to-air weapon designed for beyond-visual-range combat. It is manufactured by MBDA, a multinational entity in which France plays a role through its stake in Airbus, alongside Britain’s BAE Systems and Italy’s Leonardo.

Despite this partnership, the development of the missile was led by the United Kingdom, with BAE Systems playing a leading role. The Meteor was initially commissioned by six countries—Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.
