In the latest development in the Israel-Hamas war, the Palestinian extremist group recently stated that it wants to end the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Hamas said it is ready to release all the Israeli hostages at once and in return, it demanded a five-year ceasefire in Gaza. The proposal has come at a time when Israel is carrying out fierce air strikes in Gaza. Palestinians are suffering heavy loss of life and property in these deadly air strikes.
As per a report, based on conversation of Hamas official with AFP, by Israeli website Jerusalem Post, a delegation of Hamas has left for Cairo for a meeting with Egyptian officials. The delegation, headed by Khalil al-Hayya will present its views on Gaza ceasefire in front of Egyptian officials.
Hamas leadership in Gaza is facing significant pressure from residents to cease hostilities and disarm. This civilian pressure is hindering Hamas’s ability to secure aid for reconstruction efforts, as continued armament prevents serious international assistance and precludes the deployment of Arab peacekeeping forces.
However, Egypt’s latest take on the ongoing war will be known in the coming days. It is expected that Hamas has nearly 59 hostages in Gaza. Negotiators are constantly trying to reach an agreement under which the hostages will be brought back and the war in Gaza will be stopped.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1200 deaths and the abduction of around 250 individuals. This prompted a retaliatory Israeli offensive in Gaza. Subsequent Israeli airstrikes have caused widespread destruction in Gaza, with over 50,000 reported fatalities and the territory largely reduced to ruins. International efforts to cease hostilities have thus far been unsuccessful.
