New Delhi: The Indian embassy in Beirut has issued an advisory warning Indians in Lebanon and those planning to go there, as escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah sparked fears of a full-fledged war between the two warring parties who have been exchanging limited firepower since the Hamas attack deep inside southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

“Remain in contact with Embassy of India in Beirut through their email id: cons.beirut@mea.gov.in or the emergency phone number +96176860128,” said the advisory posted on X by India in Lebanon @IndiaInLebanon, the Official X account of the Embassy of India, Beirut.

As many as 12 people died and at least 19 were wounded to varying degrees after a rocket hit Israeli-occupied Majdal Shams, which Israel says was carried out by Iran-backed Hezbollah.

According to an IDF situational assessment and IDF intelligence, the rocket launch towards Majdal Shams was carried out by Hezbollah.

Israel’s security cabinet on Sunday authorised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to decide on the “manner and timing” of a response to the rocket strike in the Golan Heights which Israel blamed on Lebanon based militia Hezbollah.

Israel said that Hezbollah will “pay the price” for the rocket attack at Golan Heights while Hezbollah has “firmly” denied the allegations that it was behind the strike.

The United States on Sunday also blamed Hezbollah for the Majdal Shams strike. “This attack was conducted by Lebanese Hezbollah. It was their rocket, and launched from an area they control,” the White House said in a statement.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said through her national security adviser that her “support for Israel’s security is ironclad.”
