New Delhi, June 7: With merely two months to go for the general elections in Pakistan, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s former wife Reham Khan has caused a political storm in the country with her allegations of sexual harassment against the former, who is a prime ministerial hopeful.
The serious allegations against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief have been made in Reham’s autobiographical book ‘Reham Khan’, a leaked manuscript of which is available online.
News 18, in its report, cited Reham saying that in the book she has revealed instances of rampant sexual coercion and use of sexual favours for political gains within the ranks of Tehreek-e-Insaf, including some that directly relate to Imran Khan.
“I’ve discussed sexual harassment, sexual coercion and how it is used. How sexual favours are used for political positions, and media positions. And some of those are related directly to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf,” Reham told News 18.
Reham also accused PTI of allowing politicians with records of gang-rape and sexual crimes to become members of the party.
Following the allegations, Reham, whose marriage with Imran ended in just 15 months, has now been served a legal notice by first husband Dr Ijaz Rehman, cricketer Wasim Akram, a British businessman, Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari, and PTI media coordinator Anila Khawaja. All four have claimed that she defamed them in her autobiography.
According to another media report, Reham, in her autobiography, has accused Wasim Akram of using his late wife to carry out his sexual fantasies by forcing her make illicit relations with another man while he watched.
On Monday, Reham had said that Imran is not ‘sadiq and amin’ (honest and righteous) in line with Constitutional provisions as he hid this third marriage for two months. She further asked Supreme Court Chief Justice Saqib Nisar to suo moto cognizance of the matter.
She claimed Khan had kept his marriage to faith healer Bushra Maneka under wraps for two months and equivocated when pressed for an answer. This constituted a violation of Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution, she was quoted as saying by the Pakistani media.
Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as prime minister in the Panama Papers case by the Supreme Court under the same provision.
Reham has remained at the centre of controversy after the manuscript of her book was leaked online, which irked several PTI leaders who took to Twitter to accuse her of being part of an “agenda” ahead of the July 25 general elections.
65-year-old Khan’s previous two marriages ended in divorce. His first marriage was with Jemima Goldsmith, daughter of a British billionaire, in 1995, which lasted nine years. Khan has two sons from her.
