Mumbai, Sept 26: Former US Senator Larry Pressler on Monday suggested that India and the US should attack Pakistan to destroy its nuclear sites, adding that Donald Trump may turn out to be the best American president yet for India as he has adopted a hardline position against Islamabad on the issue of terrorism. He also said Pakistan should be treated as ‘rogue state’. Pressler’s observation assumes significance as he authored the famous Pressler Amendment which in 1990 blocked US military aid to Pakistan when the then US President George W Bush couldn’t establish that Islamabad was not developing nukes. “US must declare Pakistan a terrorist state, cut off all aid and must not treat India and Pakistan as equals. India is a democracy, Pakistan isn’t. And Pakistan and especially the ISI have lied to us for decades,” Larry Pressler was quoted as saying. He made these remarks as he releases his new book, Neighbours in Arms, which tells how the US foreign policy let Pakistan develop nuclear weapons and the story of the Pressler Amendment. Pressler was hailed as a ‘hero’ in India and, in his own words, “a devil in Pakistan” after the US cancelled the delivery of close to 30 F-16 aircraft to Islamabad. The 75-year-old politician, who supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential polls, hailed the US President Donald Trump for putting Pakistan on notice for harbouring terrorists. He also noted that Trump has been making efforts to get a hold on the Pentagon, which always encouraged Pakistan. Trump’s description of the Pentagon as “a swamp” was a good sign, he said. Trump’s warning to Pakistan on providing safe haven to terrorists and his request for India to help the US in Afghanistan signalled a recasting of relations, Pressler noted. A three-term Senator and twice a member of the House of Representatives, Pressler lauded the Modi-government for being tough with Pakistan on terrorism. He went further to call the denial of a US visa to Narendra Modi when the latter was Gujarat Chief Minister “a stain” on the US. He believes had the US stopped the financial aid, the Pakistan wouldn’t have developed nuclear weapons.
