Florida, Sep 5: Florida police rescued an Indian woman who alleged that she was being beaten by her husband and in-laws who travelled from India to assist their son. According to the woman, her in-laws travelled to Florida to ‘discipline’ the woman for being ‘disobedient’. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said 33-year-old Silky Gaind called her parents and informed them of the abuse. Her parents then informed the authorities.
Police said that Silky Gaind was held in their house by her husband, 33-year-old Devbir Kalsi, and his parents Jasbir, 67, and Bhupinder Kalsi, 61. Kalsi had reportedly asked his parents to ‘counsel and discipline his wife for being disobedient’.
When the police arrived at their Riverview house, no one responded to the repeated knocks. Gaind later tried to open the door and asked the police to help her and her 1-year-old daughter.
Kalsi was later arrested. According to the arrest report, on Friday, Kalsi battered her “repeatedly and forcefully”. It also said that Kalsi’s parents also beat her when she tried to defend herself. In fact, the infant was also hurt during the assault. The report also read that Jasbir even threatened the woman with a knife and later, locked inside a room.
The man’s parents may be charged with “false imprisonment, child abuse and denying access to 911″.
