In its quest to become the leader of Muslim nations, Iran has reportedly caused its own downfall. It has spent huge amounts of money in Syria but received no benefits in return. Iran also invested a lot in Hezbollah, but it didn’t work out. The country has wasted billions of dollars from Gaza to Lebanon with no results. As a result, Iran’s top religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is now facing criticism and is isolated. People are questioning his decisions that despite spending so much money Iran has lost its presence in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria due to Israeli onslaught.
A report by the Jerusalem Post, based on the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), shows that Iran has spent around USD 50 billion (approximately 4,30,13,00,00,000 rupees) in Syria and Lebanon since 2000 without getting anything in return. When Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria began weakening, Iran’s power also decreased. The same happened in Lebanon, where Hezbollah’s destruction led to failure. Iran has already faced setbacks in Gaza.
Public anger in Iran has reached new heights due to the enormous financial waste on foreign interventions. Benny Sabti, a scientist from the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), reported that the Iranian public is furious because the country is facing severe power cuts due to lack of funds. Even in the capital, Tehran, electricity is unavailable for up to six hours a day. Inflation is skyrocketing, and clean drinking water is scarce. Factories are forced to use polluting diesel-powered ships, causing heavy pollution, and cities are experiencing lockdown-like conditions, with restrictions on leaving homes. Sabti mentioned that Iran’s unemployment rate, which was previously 23%, has now surpassed 35%, and the public sees this as a failure of the government.
An Iranian general admitted the situation, acknowledging the country’s defeat. While Iran has continuously challenged Israel, the general confessed that they are now unable to retaliate or launch further operations against Israel. The public’s anger has escalated to the point where they are considering overthrowing the government, and many now pin their hopes on the incoming US President, Donald Trump, hoping for some changes.
