New York, May 10: Terrorist organisation Islamic State or ISIS killed or kidnapped almost 10,000 members of Yazidi community in genocide since it took reins of parts of Iraq. According to a student, the true scale of the genocide by ISIS militants in Iraq may never be known as thousands Yazidis continue to remain in captivity. Among those killed, many were executed by gunshot, beheading or being burned alive. Members of the Yazidi community belong to ethnic minority in Iraq.
According to a study published in weekly journal PLOS Medicine, an estimated 9,900 members of the Yazidi community were killed or captured, in a matter of days in August 2014. The report also said out of the 9,900, 3,100 were murdered, with almost half executed by gunshot, beheading or being burned alive, while the rest died from starvation, dehydration or injuries during. The genocide happened during the ISIS siege on Mount Sinjar.
During the brutal campaign by ISIS militants, 6,800 Yazidis were kidnapped, with over a third still missing at the time of the survey, said the report. It further found that while adult men were most likely to have been executed by militants, almost all of the victims who died after fleeing up Mount Sinjar were children under the age of 15. Children have been disproportionately affected by the ISIS genocide, concluded the study, study, conducted by researchers in the U.S., U.K., Israel and Iraqi Kurdistan.
ISIS campaign in Iraq against Yazidis had been recognised as genocide by the United Nations in June 2016. The UN said “there can be no impunity” for the crimes and urged the Security Council to refer the case to the International Criminal Court or a tribunal.
