Baghdad, July 9: The Old City of Mosul has completely gained freedom from the rule of Islamic State, which had made life miserable for the dwellers in the northern city of Iraq. After nine months of palpable battle with the terror outfit, the Iraqi forces succeeded in wiping out the Islamist militants. Haider al-Abadi, the Prime Minister of Iraq landed at Mosul to congratulate his force on the emphatic victory. His office, as per a report published by BBC, said he was in the city to declare its “liberation and victory”.
Since October 2016, the Iraqi troops were assisted by the US Air Force, as it led the air strikes to neutralise the scores of ISIS militants. The dreaded battle also caused collateral damage, as thousands of Mosul residents were displaced and hundreds lost their lives in the warfare.
ISIS, according to news agency Reuters, had taken an oath to fight until their last breath but were overshadowed by the Iraqi forces. The Iraqi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool was quoted by State TV saying that “somewhere around 30 militants tried to escape by swimming across the river Tigris, but their plans were hammered down by our forces and all were killed”. Now, with the elimination of ISIS from Mosul, the control of the terrorist organisation is mainly in the rural and deserted zone of Iraq which has a decent strength of population. The fierce battle led to the destruction of infrastructure in Mosul and as per United Nations, the repair cost will shoot up to $1 billion.
The United Nations also believes that seeing swollen destruction in the city the figure of $1 billion might be underestimated.
