New Delhi: The Israeli attacks on Palestine’s Gaza Strip have been going on ever since October 7, 2023 when militant group Hamas launched a massive terror attack on Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been raining bombs and invaded Gaza to target Hamas.
Now, 14 months later, Israel has said that its forces will remain in Gaza for many years. This was announced by a senior Israeli minister who said the IDF will stay in Gaza for “many years” even as Palestinian militant group Hamas has expressed its willingness to hold ceasefire talks.
Avi Dichter, Israel’s minister for food security, was quoted by the Guardian as saying that the IDF will be responsible for tackling fresh Hamas fighters in the territory as well as delivering humanitarian aid in more years to come.
Avi Dichter’s statement has suggested that the Israeli forces will maintain their presence in Gaza for an extended period the duration of which is not clarified. With the IDF’s persistent presence in the besieged Palestinian territory, there is hardly any possibility of the administration to be run by either Hamas or the Palestinian Authority (PA).
“I think that we are going to stay in Gaza for a long time. I think most people understand that (Israel) will be years in some kind of West Bank situation where you go in and out and maybe you remain along Netzarim corridor,” said Dichter.
Incoming reports suggest that the IDF is making plans to establish military bases in the Palestinian territory, especially in Gaza’s Netzarim corridor, a military zone that has been established between the Mediterranean coast and Gaza’s eastern perimeter fence.
“That was the only mission. There was not a single construction left that was taller than my waist anywhere (in the corridor), except our bases and observation towers,” Dichter added.
