New Delhi: In a major development, Israeli tanks have reportedly entered the occupied West Bank for the first time since 2002. This comes after a statement from Israel’s Defense Minister, where he said that Israeli forces would remain in parts of the Palestinian territories until the coming year. It is important to note Jenin has long been a stronghold of armed resistance against Israel.

To recall, it was in the year 2022 when the last deployment of tanks in this region took place when Israel countered a deadly Palestinian uprising. Israel is intensifying its actions in the Palestinian territories and has stated that it is committed to eliminating militancy amid a surge in attacks.

Israeli Army to Stay in the West Bank

In a big statement, Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, said that he has instructed the military to be prepared to remain in certain urban refugee camps in the West Bank until the coming year. Katz further stated that nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced from three camps in the northern West Bank, and these camps are now empty. He added that the military must be prepared to stay in the camps “for a long time” and “not allow residents to return.”

Palestinian Attacks Increase in Israel

Katz made this remark at a time when Israel is intensifying its offensive in Palestinian territories while the ceasefire halting the Gaza war remains in place. There has also been an increase in Palestinian attacks originating from the West Bank. Late Thursday night, three empty buses exploded in Israel, which police are considering a suspected terrorist attack.
