Italy: Stronger, second earthquake of 6.4 magnitude strikes near Perugia, tremors in Rome as well

Similar to the first earthquake, the seismic waves created shocks across the region of central Italy, ranging from Perugia in Umbria to Rome to the town of L'Aquila.

Italy: Stronger, second earthquake of 6.4 magnitude strikes near Perugia, tremors in Rome as well

Rome, Oct 27: Nearly an hour after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy, a stronger after-quake hit the region. The second, earthquake is reported to be of 6.4 magnitude by United State Geological Survey (USGS). The quake reportedly occurred at 9:18 PM as per local time. Maximum impact of the earthquake has been felt in villages and towns near Perugia. The epicentre of the quake is Mascareta, as reported by Italy’s volcanology centre. Tremors of the second earthquake has also been felt in capital Rome, with the centuries-old palazzi being reportedly shaken.

Similar to the first earthquake, the seismic waves created shocks across the region of central Italy, ranging from Perugia in Umbria to Rome to the town of L’Aquila. Although some old dilapidated structures have been reportedly destroyed due to the earthquake, no immediate casualties were reported. According to USGS, the depth of the earthquake is relatively shallow, with only 10 km beneath the sea-level. However, the magnitude of the earthquake is strong enough to create damage. A devastating earthquake struck Italy in August this year, claiming the lives of 300 people. The earthquake had caused damage in the region of Amatrice, causing massive damage to lives and properties in the hilltop villages. Government came under heavy criticism for the lack of disaster management mechanism in the state.
