Istanbul: Slain Journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancee on Friday demanded that all those who were allegedly responsible behind his savage murder must be punished. She also said that Khashoggi had visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul under the assumption that the Saudi authorities would not interrogate or arrest him in Turkey. Khashoggi was however worried that tensions would arise following his entry into the Saudi Consulate on October 2, said his fiancee Hatice Cengiz. “His (Jamal Khashoggi) local network in Turkey was very good as you know, his political network as well,” Cengiz told a Turkish broadcaster Haberturk. She added, “He thought Turkey is a safe country and if he would be held or interrogated, this issue would be swiftly solved.”
Meanwhile, the son of Jamal Khashoggi was reported as having left Saudi Arabia after the kingdom revoked a travel ban and welcomed him to the United States.
The murder of the Washington Post columnist and U.S. resident, Khashoggi spiralled into a crisis for Saudi Arabia. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan urged Saudi Arabia on Friday to disclose the facts behind the brutal murder including who ordered Khashoggi’s murder and the location of his body. Following the international outrage over the macabre circumstances on Jamal Khashoggi’s case, the Saudi public prosecutor reversed its statement and declared that the killing was premeditated. An earlier statement had said that Khashoggi had died accidentally in a fist-fight at the diplomatic building in Turkey.
When asked about the possibility of the crown prince’s involvement in the killing, US President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday: “Well, the prince is running things over there… so if anybody were going to be, it would be him.”
The slain journalist had also been an outright critic of the powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his policies.
