Kabul blast: 55 dead in explosion, dozens injured; Taliban hand suspected

All the victims are said to be members of the Hazara community, which has faced the onslaught of Taliban on earlier occasions too.

Kabul, July 23: A massive blast was reported from Kabul on Saturday afternoon, which has left at least 55 people dead. Dozens have been injured, who are rushed to hospital in critical condition. The amount of casualties is expected to grow, Afghan official was reported as saying by local press.

As of now, it is not clear whether the terror attack was conducted through a suicide-blast operation. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has issued an high alert in the national capital. Police has arrived on the crime spot, and is currently ferrying victims to the nearby hospital.

The blast occurred near the Deh Mazang Square, an area dominated by the minority Hazara community. All the victims are said to be members of the Hazara community, which has faced the onslaught of Taliban on earlier occasions too.

The members of Hazara community had gathered near the Deh Mazang Square to lead a march against the proposed power plant project which is expected to be installed near the settlements.

Hazaras are Persian speaking ethnic group who thrive in parts of Afghanistan and Balochistan. They are a micro-minority within the Shia community. They have been persecuted over the years in Sunni dominated Afghanistan.
