London (UK): Begum Kulsum Nawaz, wife of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif died in London on Tuesday, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif has told Geo News. She was 68 years old. According to the reports, Kulsum was placed on a life support system after her health deteriorated on Tuesday morning. Kulsum Nawaz was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August 2017 and had gone through several sessions of chemotherapy. Her son Hussain Nawaz said that she was discharged last month after her health improved but was shifted to the hospital again after her health deteriorated last night. The former First Lady of Pakistan was elected from Lahore’s NA-120 constituency in a by-election after her husband was disqualified from the seat by the Supreme Court in 2017 but left for Britain even before she could start campaigning. In her absence, daughter Maryam campaigned for her. When she couldn’t return to Pakistan, she formally took oath as a member of the National Assembly. Nawaz Sharif and their daughter Maryam are currently lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail. They were arrested by anti-corruption officials on July 16 in the Avenfield corruption case soon after they arrived in Lahore from Abu Dhabi. They were handed jail sentences of 10 years and seven years, respectively.
