Kuwait, June 26: At least 13 people are reported to be killed in a deadly bomb blast in a shiite mosque in Kuwait. The mosque was exploded in the afternoon following Friday’s congregational prayer. The blast is reported to be a suicide-attack, with the notorious Islamic extremist group, Islamic State claiming responsibility over it.
ISIS released a statement over their social media account identifying the suicide attacker as Abu Suleiman al-Muwahed and termed the targeted mosque as temple of ‘mushriks’ (polytheists) – the term which the extremist group uses to refer to Shiite muslims. The attacked mosque, ‘Imam Sadiq Mosque’ is located in Kuwait’s al-Sawabir district, which is one of the most densely populated areas of the city. It was the largest Shia prayer house of the country. The attack in the holy month of Ramadan has surprised the Kuwait government. According to Kuwait’s former information minister, Saad al-Ajmi, “Kuwait has a good record in its relationship between Sunni and Shia groups, and as a small country it has good security. The attack is a reminder that no country is immune from terrorism”.
