Lon Angeles, Oct 5: Marilou Danley, the girlfriend of Stephen Paddock who gunned down 59 people on Sunday in Las Vegas carrying out the worst mass shooting in recent US history, broke her silence and said she had no knowledge about his live-in partner’s plan. Marilou Danley arrived back in the United States from the Philippines on Tuesday night. She was mentioned as a “person of interest” in the investigation by US authorities.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the shooting, Marilou Danley denied having knowledge of the massacre Stephen Paddock was plotting when he sent her on a trip abroad to see her family. “It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone,” Danley, 62, said in a statement read by her attorney Matthew Lombard outside FBI headquarters in Los Angeles.
“He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen,” Marilou Danley said in the statement further. She added that she was worried, Paddock was going to break up with her when he wired her $100,000 (£75,400), explaining it was to buy a house. Danley, who lived with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada and was out of the country during the shooting.
“I will cooperate fully with their investigation,” she said in the statement. “Anything I can do to help ease suffering and help in any way, I will do.” Danley’s family said they believed Paddock had sent her away to her relatives deliberately in the run-up to the attacks. “I know she didn’t know anything as well like us. She was sent away. She was away so that she will be not there to interfere with what he’s planning,” her sisters said in an interview with Australia’s Channel 7 News.
Danley was not arrested on her arrival at Las Vegas airport, but Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents met her and in an attempt to discover what led Paddock to carry out the massacre. As police scramble to identify a motive for the attack, officers focused on financial transactions carried out by the 64-year-old retired accountant.
Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire with automatic weapons on some 22,000 people at the Route 91 Harvest concert from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Sunday at around 10.30 p.m. Investigators at the hotel from which Paddock launched his assault found no fewer than 23 guns, including a Kalashnikov and AR-15 assault rifles, and a vast stockpile of military grade .223 calibre ammunition. In total, across three locations, 47 firearms were recovered.
