Ireland, June 2: A man of Indian origin who is Ireland’s first openly gay minister is all set to gain the top seat in the country as on Friday he was elected as the Prime Minister. Leo Varadkar will be the youngest Irish Prime Minister besides being the youngest PM in the world. 38-year-old Varadkar’s father Ashok tied the knot to his mother Miriam, a nurse by profession while working in Britain’s National Health Service. They tied the knot somewhere in the 1960s. Mr. Leo stepped into politics in 2007 and gained fame in 2015 by declaring himself a gay. This announcement, as per Hindustan Times, jolted his father but junior Varadkar told that his father is a very supportive person and will always be by his side. Before the 38-year-old, Kenny was commanding the big office but stepped down after a term of six years. Both Kenny and the Indian origin man are from the same Fine Gael party and the latter enjoys the support of his party members. Varadkar was pitted against Simon Coveney and won the top position despite many from the ruling Fine Gael party in Ireland voting for Coveney.

Gay marriages were allowed in Ireland in 2015 which was given birth way by a popular vote. Post victory, Varadkar expressed joy, saying, he was delighted and honoured. The Guardian quoted Kenney saying that he had given full support to Leo. ” It is a great honour for him and I am sure he will put all his efforts to work for the people to improve their lives,” stated Kenny. He also thanked Simon Coveney for a good and real contest.
