The world is entering a technological revolution that could change the future of humanity. Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from science fiction to reality. It has begun to change industries, societies and has impacted our daily lives. The transition from AI to synthetic life (SI) is no longer a distant fantasy; it is reality knocking at the door. A high-stakes race on a global scale has begun, and the players of this race could determine the fate of civilization.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the computer science area that gives machines the ability to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. AI enables machines to accomplish tasks such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, language understanding, pattern recognition, and making decisions. In other words, AI allows computers or machines to think, learn, and act like humans using pre-programmed rules and/or by processing and analyzing large amounts of data to make predictions and decisions.
The artificial intelligence we utilize today, including ChatGPT, Google Translate, and chess-playing machines, is encoded as narrow intelligence. These systems can perform certain backwards-compatible tasks with great effectiveness, but they do not actually reason like humans or have self-awareness. Experienced professionals often make this comparison: these AIs are what we might describe as a “top student” who is great at one subject.
Next will be General Intelligence. The level at which a machine has a human-like level of understanding and the ability to learn. It will be able to understand the problem context and find solutions autonomously. Researchers believe that this technology will develop gradually, much like human development. Even though we do not have Artificial General Intelligence(AGI)at this point, there is fast-moving research everywhere that is heading in that direction.
According to the Google Cloud, Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to the hypothetical intelligence of a machine that possesses the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can. It is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that aims to mimic the cognitive abilities of the human brain. There are three kinds of artificial intelligence:
This will be the time when machines are far more intelligent than humans, where they will outperform us in reasoning, problem-solving, and creativity. According to the media reports, scientists feel that this level of intelligence could be the greatest singular opportunity for and the greatest existential threat to humanity. The concern is that superintelligence will one day control human society. As per Google Cloud, ASI surpasses human intelligence and can potentially solve problems that are currently beyond the capabilities of humans.
Among the most dramatic and strategically interesting possibilities is synthetic intelligence. Experts say that it will not simply be a machine; it will be a new being. It will possess emotions, desires, and its own personal identity. Although it will not be biological life forms, it will be “alive.” These scientists hint that we might be on the verge of a new species if new synthetic intelligence is successful, and will be replacing human civilization.
Experts say that the progression from AI to AGI, then ASI, and finally SI is not just a progression of intelligence. But it is acknowledging the emergence of a new form of life on Earth. The critical question is whether humanity will accept and embrace this new civilization or take a knee to it.
