Kuala Lumpur: Israeli attacks have reduced Gaza to ruins. According to a United Nations agency, Gaza is facing a state of famine. Amid the crisis, voices of support for Gaza are rising from around the world. Several countries have also announced financial aid. One of them is the Islamic country Malaysia. Malaysia has announced that it will provide Gaza with financial assistance of 100 million ringgit (24 million US dollars).
However, the announcement has now become a major burden on Malaysia’s crisis-hit economy. On Sunday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, while addressing a crowd of nearly 20,000 people at a solidarity rally for Palestine in Kuala Lumpur, announced this package.
He urged corporate leaders, wealthy citizens, and ordinary Malaysians to contribute donations for medical and humanitarian relief for Gaza. The Malaysian government hopes that ordinary citizens and large corporate households will provide a significant portion of the financial aid to be given to Gaza.
On Friday, the United Nations officially declared a “man-made” famine in Gaza. Experts stated that 500,000 people in Gaza are facing “horrific” hunger. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar on Sunday directly blamed Israel, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of targeting Hamas in its deadly campaign in a way that hits children who “don’t even know how to walk yet.”
In his speech at a rally, Anwar said, “In recent days, I have neither seen, read, nor heard of such cruel people. Netanyahu and people like him are truly ‘mad.'”
