New Delhi: Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday. He has taken over the government amid deteriorating relations with the United States following President Donald Trump’s return to power. Carney has replaced Justin Trudeau, who had been Prime Minister of Canada since 2015.
Mark Carney is known in the banking and financial world as a trusted leader. He also served as the head of the Bank of Canada from 2008, during which he stabilized the country’s economy during the global economic crisis. In 2013, he became the first non-British governor of the Bank of England and played a key role in mitigating the economic impacts during Brexit.
New Prime Minister Mark Carney will be focusing on repairing the relationship amid challenges that have left historic ties between Canada and the United States strained by Trump’s return. The former central banker was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on Sunday, March 9.
Mark Carney’s new cabinet could be about half the size of Trudeau’s cabinet. Quoting sources, a Bloomberg report said that his cabinet is expected to have 15 to 20 ministers, while at present there are 37 ministers including the Prime Minister.
Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum and is threatening to impose big tariffs on all Canadian products on April 2. He has threatened economic pressure in his merger threats and suggested that the border is just a fictional line.
The US trade war and Trump’s call to make Canada the 51st US state have not gone down well with Canadians, who are protesting against the US national anthem at NHL and NBA games. It is being told that local people are avoiding buying American goods whenever possible, and they are boycotting American products.
