New Delhi: A highly dangerous natural event has unfolded in the Albay region of the Philippines. On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Mayon Volcano erupted marking a return to active status. Consequently, thousands of people have been evacuated from the area. Officials have issued warnings regarding potential lava flows and landslides. Thousands of residents have been evacuated from the Albay province located southeast of Manila following a resurgence in volcanic activity at Mayon. During this event, plumes of ash billowed into the sky, completely engulfing the surrounding areas.
Public Barred from Entering 6-km Radius of Volcano
Meanwhile, following the eruption, the alert level measured on a five-tier scale has been raised to Level 3. Additionally, residents have been issued alerts regarding the dangers of lava flows, landslides, and further eruptions, and have been strictly prohibited from entering any area within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano. The renowned volcano known for its relatively compact size and standing approximately 2,462 meters tall is currently experiencing Strombolian-style eruptions. Although the intensity of these eruptions is currently classified as moderate, the volcano is intermittently spewing out lava, gases, and volcanic debris.
Ash Spreads to Surrounding Areas; Haze Prevails
The spread of volcanic ash has disrupted transportation in the surrounding regions, and visibility has significantly decreased. As a result, approximately 5,000 people have been accommodated in relief centers.
According to officials, Strombolian activity is currently being observed within the volcano, characterized by intermittent explosive bursts of lava, gases, and volcanic debris. Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines and also serves as a popular tourist destination; however, the situation remains volatile.
