Meet Amar Subramanya, Indian-origin researcher who worked for Microsoft and was part of Google’s DeepMind team, now named Apple’s new VP of AI

At Apple, Subramanya will report directly to Craig Federighi, the Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, as he takes charge of Apple’s AI efforts.

Apple has named Amar Subramanya, a well-known expert in artificial intelligence, as its new vice president of AI. He will take over the role from John Giannandrea. Amar will work under Craig Federighi and lead important areas like Apple’s foundation models, machine-learning research, and AI safety, the company said. Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked Giannandrea for his years of work in strengthening Apple’s AI efforts. Cook said, “AI has always been an important part of Apple’s plan. We are happy to have Amar join Craig’s team and bring his strong AI experience to Apple.” He also added that Craig Federighi has played a major role in pushing Apple’s AI work forward, including plans to bring a more personalized version of Siri to users next year.

Who is Amar Subramanya?

Amar Subramanya is a senior AI expert who has now joined Apple as its Vice President of AI. Before coming to Apple, he worked at Microsoft as the Corporate Vice President of AI. Earlier, he spent 16 years at Google, where he led engineering for the Gemini assistant.

Apple said his strong background in AI and machine-learning research, and his experience turning that research into real products, will help the company as it builds new Apple Intelligence features.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Subramanya has worked in important roles at Microsoft and was also part of Google’s DeepMind team, known for its advanced AI work. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering from Bangalore University (1997–2001). He later earned a PhD from the University of Washington between 2005 and 2009.
