Washington: Despite assassination attempts, criminal convictions, and a shift in political opponents, Republican Donald Trump secured victory in the 2024 US presidential election. The Republican leader has also served as the 45th President of the US after his first victory in 2016. Speaking of his supporters, Billionaire Timothy Mellon, an heir to the renowned Mellon family fortune, has become a key financial supporter in US President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, surpassing even Elon Musk, Tesla CEO in terms of contributions.

Timothy Mellon prefers to remain largely out of the public eye. Despite his massive donations, Mellon maintains a low profile and avoids much of the spotlight, unlike other high-profile donors. His contributions have indeed had a notable impact.

Recent filings with the United States Federal Election Commission reveal that Timothy Mellon has donated $125 million to the pro-Trump Super PAC, Make America Great Again, Inc. His total contributions for this election cycle, which also include support for Republican congressional candidates and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have reached an extraordinary $165 million, according to campaign finance watchdog OpenSecrets.

According to the FirstPost report, Tesla Boss Elon Musk has made a notable but relatively smaller contribution of $119 million to a Trump-supporting PAC, bringing his total to $132 million when including donations to other Republican candidates. The Tesla CEO had even expressed his willingness to serve after Trump hinted that he would consider Elon Musk for a cabinet role or advisory post if he wins.

Timothy Mellon comes from a long history of wealth, with his family fortune tracing back to the Gilded Age. His grandfather, Andrew Mellon, was a prominent financier who served as the US Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932.

With a family net worth of around $14 billion, Mellon is a prominent figure in American high society. Although he inherited this wealth, Mellon charted his own course in business, founding a computer programming company in the 1960s and later acquiring and growing Guilford Transportation Industries in the 1980s.

The venture later transformed into Pan Am Systems, a leading rail transport company, which Mellon ultimately sold for $600 million in 2020.

Estimates of Mellon’s personal wealth vary significantly, ranging from $700 million in a 2014 deposition to $1 billion reported by the London Times, and up to $4.2 billion, according to a family source cited by Vanity Fair.

Mellon, once a supporter of liberal causes and Democratic candidates, shifted to conservative views over time. This transition is reflected in his political donations and his 2015 autobiography, where he criticized welfare programs as “slavery redux” and argued that government assistance merely incentivizes votes through “freebies” like food stamps and Obamacare.

In recent years, Mellon has focused his donations on conservative causes, including a $53 million contribution to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s border wall fund in 2021, making up 98% of the total funds raised. In 2010, he even donated $1.5 million to support Arizona’s immigration law. His substantial financial backing plays a crucial role in sustaining Trump’s efforts, highlighting the influence of wealthy individuals in shaping US elections.
