Melbourne (Australia): The Victoria Police on Friday arrested a man after multiple people were hurt in a rush hour stabbing incident in Melbourne’s Bourke Street. The Australian police apprehended a suspect near a burning vehicle. The man was shot by police after he lunged at them with a knife.
At least two people have been taken to a local hospital. Police initially responded to a report of a car on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4:20 PM. A video of the attack, which has gone viral, shows a man attacking the police with a knife, moments after the car exploded in flames.
“Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage. A small number of people are being treated for stab wounds. The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage. The area has been cordoned off and the public are urged to avoid the area,” the Victoria Police tweeted.
The suspect was later shot and is currently in a critical condition. Paramedics said they assessed three people at the scene, one with a neck injury: “They are in a suspected critical condition. A second person has been taken to hospital with a head injury. Condition not yet known. A third person has also been taken to hospital.”
Police warned people to avoid the area, although the suspect is believed to have been detained.
