The Kremlin said on Tuesday that the long talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner did not lead to any agreement on the main issue i.e. the land Russia has taken from Ukraine. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov told AFP that Russia and the US still have no “common ground” on the question of occupied Ukrainian territories. He said that some American ideas were open for discussion, but there was still no deal.

Ushakov described the meeting as “very useful and constructive,” but admitted that both countries still have a lot of work to do in Washington and Moscow. He said the two sides went through the US’s four-part proposal during a five-hour meeting. According to him, there were a few areas where both sides could agree, but President Trump strongly disagreed with several suggestions.

When asked if the talks made their positions drift further apart, Ushakov replied, “Definitely not.”

These remarks came after President Vladimir Putin held talks with Witkoff and Kushner. Ushakov said the overall discussion was positive, but the two sides still have major differences on Ukraine.

The meeting took place just a few days after U.S. officials met a Ukrainian delegation in Florida, talks that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as “cautiously hopeful.” According to Reuters, Putin spent around five hours discussing the issues with the American envoys, finishing close to midnight in Moscow.

Earlier that day, Putin accused Ukraine’s European supporters of blocking U.S. attempts to end the war. He claimed that Europe was not interested in peace and was instead pushing for the conflict to continue.

He warned that if Europe chose to start a war with Russia, his country was fully prepared. “If Europe suddenly wants to fight us and begins a war, we are ready from the very first moment. No one should doubt that,” Putin said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said some things still need to be worked out in the draft peace proposal backed by President Trump but that “now more than ever, there is a chance to end this war.”
