Banned Islamist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, who aims to establish Islamic rule across the globe, including in in Israel and India, is reportedly organizing a ‘Caliphate Conference’ in Canada, triggering controversy due to the group’s extremist views. The conference, which was earlier scheduled to be held in Mississauga, is now going to be held in Hamilton city in Ontario on January 18, 2025, after Mississauga city mayor Carolyn Parrish opposed the event and denied permission, citing concerns.
Hizb ut-Tahrir’s planned ‘Caliphate Conference’ aims to push its agenda of the group’s goal of establishing an Islamic Caliphate across the world which would be governed by Sharia law. The event seeks to unite Muslim-majority countries under a single Islamic state.
Notably, the Hizb ut-Tahrir is banned in countries several countries, including the UK, India, China, various Arab nations, and even Pakistan, but operates freely in Canada. Its Canadian arm– the Hizb ut-Tahrir Canada– has repeatedly rejected allegations of the group being a violent organization.
In a statement, the group said it aims to establish a Sharia-based Caliphate in the Muslim world but rejects violence as a means to pursue its self-imposed goals, claiming that it operates within Islamic principles.
According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, the Hizb ut-Tahrir’s Canadian unit, describes itself as a non-violent group who wishes to organize a peaceful conference on establishing caliphate rule in the Muslim world, but the advertisements of the event, have also included countries like Greece, India, Spain, parts of Balkan nations, and even a large part of Africa, in a self-styled ‘map’ of their so-called ‘Caliphate’.
Additionally, the conference will also hold discussions the United States, Israel as being the enemies of Muslims, and the liberation of Palestine, the report said. On its official website, Hizb ut-Tahrir highlights the oppression of Palestinians and Israel’s alleged “genocide” in Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon.
The group also urges Muslims in Islamic countries to overthrow the “puppet regimes” in these nations and come together to build a united Caliphate of Muslims. The group, formed in Jerusalem in 1953, is vociferously against the Jewish state of Israel, and its “occupation” of Palestinian lands, and advocates for its annihilation, besides establishing an Islamic Caliphate in Southern European, Asian, West Asian and African countries.
Meanwhile, the Hizb ut-Tahrir’s upcoming conference has been opposed by several Canadian MPs, over concerns of extremism and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Conservative party MP, Don Stewart, who represents the Toronto—St. Paul federal electoral district, said the event should not allowed in Canada due to the group’s extremist views. CIJA also urged Ontario authorities to stop the conference and designate the anti-Semitic organization as a terrorist group.
