Kabul: The Taliban’s foreign ministry in Afghanistan has requested the Modi government to hand over the control of the Afghan embassy in Delhi to the Taliban. India has recently established high-level contact with the Taliban for the very first time after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Dubai. Additionally, India has also engaged in discussions with the Taliban-administered Afghanistan to enhance bilateral relations and explore the use of Iran’s Chabahar port.
The Taliban administration has resumed discussions with the Indian government to take control of the Afghan embassy in New Delhi, according to Amu TV’s report. The Taliban has also reportedly submitted a new list of proposed diplomats to Indian authorities, which includes Najib Shaheen, the son of Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban representative in Doha.
It is important to note that the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Delhi has been closed since the end of November. At that time, Afghan diplomats stated that despite a long wait, they were unable to secure visa extensions for diplomats or bring about a change in the Indian government’s stance.
After a meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary, the Taliban has once again submitted a list of its diplomatic nominees to New Delhi. Shinkai Karokhail, Afghanistan’s former ambassador to Canada, stated that India will carefully examine the matter. Karokhail said, “India cannot outright reject the Taliban’s request, but it will be highly selective in approving individuals for diplomatic roles.” She further added, “Given the Taliban’s close ties with Pakistan’s intelligence and military, New Delhi may avoid appointing individuals directly linked to Islamabad’s security establishment.”
According to the reports, India may also consider reopening its embassy in Kabul. The embassy in Kabul was closed since the Taliban took power in August 2021. In addition to the embassy in New Delhi, Afghanistan has two consulates in India—one in Mumbai and the other in Hyderabad. The Mumbai consulate is currently overseen by Ikramuddin Kamil, who was appointed by the Taliban and is a graduate of the South Asian University in India.
