Islamabad, July 28: After the disqualification of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Former Army Chief and President Pervez Musharraf on Friday said the credit for the historic verdict by the apex court goes to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan for fighting the legal battle. Musharraf further said the country needs no pre-elections and the present government should complete its term. Pakistani Election Commission will conduct the general elections next year. Musharraf further noted, “an interim government of technocrats should run the country.”

Supreme Court on Friday disqualified the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for holding assets in offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and evading tax. The revelations were made by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in a document leak popularly known as Panama Papers. The joint investigation team formed by the Supreme Court stated Sharif family acknowledged the ownership of Avenfield Apartments and other companies like Gulf Steel Mills. JIT also held Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, of manipulating the documents to mislead the Supreme Court. However, she was caught red handed when her documents, belonging to times prior to 2007 were found to be typed in Calibri Font. But the investigation report said Calibri Font was commercially not available before 2007 by Microsoft.

After his resignation, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Ahsan Iqbal emerged as frontrunners for next Prime Minister. It was speculated Brother of Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif may lead the government once he is elected to National Assembly. Shehbaz Sharif is the Chief Minister of Punjab province in Pakistan.
