Donald Trump’s Indian-American Republican counterpart, Nikki Haley, on Sunday warned India against pursuing Russian oil imports and asked New Delhi to work with the White House to find a solution “sooner the better”. She mentioned that the “decades of friendship” between both nations is a “basis to move past the turbulence” of current tariff-related tensions.

Sharing a post on X(previously Twitter), Nikki Haley wrote, “India must take Trump’s point over Russian oil seriously, and work with the White House to find a solution. The sooner the better. Decades of friendship and good will between the world’s two largest democracies provide a solid basis to move past the current turbulence.”

“Navigating issues like trade disagreements and Russian oil imports demands hard dialogue. But, we should not lose sight of what matters most: our shared goals. To face China, the United States must have a friend in India,” Haley further added.

Why are Russian oil imports a sensitive issue for US-India relations?

She shared on X an excerpt of the opinion piece she wrote last week for Newsweek amid strain in ties between the two countries after President Donald Trump imposed a 50 pe rcent tariff on Indian goods.  Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has been facing criticism within her party for favouring India amid tariff tensions between the two countries.

In her article, Haley stated, “Trump is right to target India’s massive Russian oil purchases, which are helping to fund Vladimir Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine.”  However, she added that India must be treated like the “prized free and democratic partner that it is—not an adversary like China.” She highlighted decades of “friendship and goodwill” between India and the US, the world’s two largest democracies. It provides a “solid basis to move past the current turbulence,” she added.

Furthermore, she added that the US and India “should not lose sight of what matters most: our shared goals.” “To face China, the United States must have a friend in India,” she added. In her article, she stated, “India stands alone in its potential to manufacture at China-like scale for products that can’t be quickly or efficiently produced here(in the US).”

Who is Nikki Haley?

According to the news agency PTI report, Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, was the US Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump’s first presidential term, becoming the first Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in the US administration.

In 2013, she formally declared her candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections and withdrew her run last March. President Trump has increased tariffs on Indian imports to a staggering 50 percent, including a 25 percent additional duties for India’s purchases of Russian crude oil, which will begin on August 27.
