After General Asim Munir took over the command of the Pakistan Army, the influence of the Pakistan Army has increased on government institutions. People close to the army chief are occupying high positions in the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Even diplomatic passports are being issued to the army chief’s family members by flouting the rules. According to the report, Army Chief Asim Munir’s maternal uncle Syed Babar Ali Shah has almost become the king of Islamabad. He is playing a role in all important appointments and promotions. This also includes the appointment of former DG FIA Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir. Serious allegations of corruption have been leveled against Jahangir.

Dominance of relatives of Army Chief

Fact Focus has discussed the appointment of some very big people to close relatives of Asim Munir. Munir’s cousin Hajra Sohail was the scholarship manager at the government organization Pakistan Education Endowment Fund (PEEF) at the time of her appointment in November 2022. When the Ministry of Education started a process to appoint the CEO of PEEF after Munir became the chief, the Prime Minister’s Office stopped it. Within a few months of this, she became the CEO of the same organization. In this way, the entire control of the organization came into her hands. This shows how her name came directly from the PM’s Office, defying all the rules.

Asim Munir is also believed to have had an influence on Mohsin Naqvi’s becoming the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board and the Home Minister. Mohsin is a close relative of Asim’s wife Iram. Mohsin Naqvi was made the Chief Minister of Punjab just 55 days after General Munir became the Army Chief. After this, he was also elevated to the post of PCB head, which is considered a very big post. When Naqvi was made the chairman of PCB, he was the Chief Minister of Punjab. After this, he got the post of Home Minister in Shahbaz Sharif’s government.
