Islamabad, August 1: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. The National Assembly chose him as the new head of the government. He was elected comfortably as his party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has the majority in the House– the party has 173 members which are more than the required number.
Pakistan Supreme Court last week disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from the prime ministerial post, saying he lied to the country. The court was hearing the Panama Papers case against the PML-N chief.
Who is Shahid Khaqan Abbasi?
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was born in Karachi on December 27, 1958. He is an electrical engineer and a businessman by profession. He completed his higher education from US universities. He is the owner of Airblue airlines.
Abbasi was first elected to the National Assembly in 1988 from NA-50 in Rawalpindi. He again won the elections on an Islami Jamhoori Ittehad ticket. During 1999 coup, in which General Pervez Musharraf overthrew the Nawaz Sharif government, Abbasi was also accused in the infamous plan hijacking case. It was alleged that he was involved in denying permission to land to the plane carrying Pervez Musharraf. He spent two years in jail and was later acquitted. He was the minister of commerce in the Yousuf Raza Geelani government. He was serving as the minister of petroleum in natural resource in the Sharif government.
