New Delhi: The Pakistani government has previously made several claims about discovering reserves of gold and other precious metals within the country. To recall, in 2015, the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the discovery of large reserves of iron, copper, and gold in the city of Chiniot in Punjab, stating that these reserves would bring prosperity to Pakistan.

Recently, the Pakistan’s Punjab government mining minister. Sher Ali Gorachani made a similar claim. Gorachani said that gold reserves worth approximately 700 billion Pakistani rupees exist in Attock.

According to local media, the provincial minister stated that 2.8 million tolas (approx. 32 metric tons) of gold reserves have been discovered in a 32-kilometer area in Attock. Based on current market rates, the value of this gold is estimated to be between 600 and 700 billion Pakistani rupees.

In a big statement, former Punjab mining minister Ibrahim Hasan Murad claimed that gold reserves exist at the confluence of the Sindh and Kabul rivers in Attock. Speaking to a private TV channel in Pakistan, he said that during his tenure as minister, reports surfaced that some individuals were digging in the Attock area using machinery.

According to Hasan Murad, when inquiries were made, it was revealed that people were searching for gold there. Subsequently, Section 144 was imposed in the area to ban gold exploration.

He stated that the Geological Survey of Pakistan had collected 500 samples from a 25-kilometer area, which confirmed the presence of gold there.

Where is the gold reserve located in Pakistan?

Pakistan’s Ministry of Petroleum’s Mining Department at Saudi Arabia’s Future Minerals Forum in its report has stated that the gold reserves in Pakistan are located in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amounting to approximately 1.6 billion tons.

The report states that Pakistan produces about 1.5 to 2 tons of raw gold annually.

It further mentions that with the completion of the “Reko Diq Project” in Balochistan, Pakistan’s raw gold production could reach 8 to 10 tons annually within the next ten years.

Regarding silver production, the report indicates that its reserves are also found in Balochistan.
The report states that silver mining in Pakistan is largely associated with the extraction of other metals, particularly copper and gold. The significant production of silver is essentially a byproduct of the production of these other metals.

According to the 2022-23 report by the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP), an organization operating under the Ministry of Energy, efforts to explore minerals and precious metals are underway at various locations across the country.

The report mentions that GSP is conducting studies to explore copper and gold deposits in Barit Hancoi in Gilgit-Baltistan, administered by Pakistan.

Additionally, GSP has been using geochemical techniques to investigate the presence of placer gold and other metals in the Attock district of Punjab and the Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.
