Amid escalating tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Islamabad has once again initiated its efforts to normalise relations with the Taliban Government by holding closed-door discussions with the group ruling Afghanistan. However, during the meeting the Talib leaders strongly criticised Pak, making it clear that intimidation tactics were unacceptable. Pakistan’s officials tried to talk on curbing the activities of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but the Taliban rejected their demands.

Taliban Reprimands Pakistan

During the meeting, the Taliban mentioned that the TTP posed a problem but raised objections to Pak’s approach in dealing with the issue. Notably, the discussion was held to find a way forward in resolving the strained relations between both the countries, majorly revolving around the presence of TTP and its allies in Afghanistan, as per The Express Tribune.

Pakistan’s Demands

Pakistan has long been concerned about cross-border terrorist sanctuaries that are safeguarding and providing safe havens for militants attacking its territory. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Talib government to neutralise this threat. While the Taliban publicly insists that the TTP issue is Pakistan’s internal matter.

Taliban’s Firm Stance on Intimidation

Taliban officials criticised Pakistan’s aggressive stance on the TTP issue and argued that a hardline approach would not yield results. Taliban suggested initiating a dialogue process with TTP, warning Islamabad that threats and coercion would only be counterproductive.

However, Pakistan expressed frustration, stating it had exhausted all negotiation options and provided ample time to Kabul to address the issue, with little progress made.

Pakistan’s Position on TTP’s Demands

  • Pakistan rejected the demands of the TTP during discussions with Afghan officials.
  • The Taliban suggested that negotiations often start with maximum demands that are later softened.
  • Pakistan emphasized the distinction between the U.S. occupation and the TTP’s challenge to its state authority.
  • The talks highlight the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding the TTP issue.
  • Both nations are facing challenges in reconciling their approaches to the TTP and its impact on regional stability.
