New Delhi: The bankrupt Pakistan, which has been facing a serious economic crisis for several years, is now witnessing a new challenge. According to the recent United Nations report, millions of people in the country are at risk of starvation. The report states that approximately 11 million people in Pakistan are currently dealing with hunger. The report states that many areas are experiencing severe food shortages, and people are standing just one step away from a famine-like emergency.
Last Friday, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its Global Report on Food Crises 2025, painting a grim picture of food insecurity in Pakistan. It highlights that conditions are especially dire in conflict-affected and impoverished regions such as Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the report, 11 million people are facing severe food insecurity, out of which approximately 1.7 million are in what the FAO classifies as an “emergency” situation—just one step away from famine.
The report further adds that the 68 areas in rural districts are plagued by poverty and decades of political neglect. In several places, the situation worsened after devastating floods, leaving nearly 22 percent of the population in these regions on the brink of starvation. Malnutrition has also emerged as a major concern in the southern provinces of Balochistan and Sindh.
