New Delhi: Since Bangladesh’s formation, Dhaka has rarely been as easy for the Pakistani Army as it has been during the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. Mohammad Yunus has completely opened the country’s doors to the Pakistani Army. The presence of the Pakistan Army’s second-highest general in Dhaka is proof of this. Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, arrived in Dhaka on the night of October 24 on an Emirates Airlines flight. It has been reported that he plans to visit the Chicken Neck, which has alerted India.
General Shamshad Mirza arrived in Dhaka with a six-member delegation, which includes his wife Shazia Sahir, Brigadier Mohammad Rashid Khan, Commodore Khan Muhammad Asif, and two majors. He is staying at the Radisson Hotel in Dhaka. General Mirza is considered the second most powerful person in Pakistan after Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Salahuddin Shoaib Chowdhury, editor of the Bangladeshi newspaper Blitz, has made a shocking revelation about General Mirza’s visit.
Chowdhury claimed that General Mirza will visit some border areas, including the “Chicken Neck,” during his visit. India’s Siliguri Corridor is known as the Chicken Neck because this narrow strip of land connects Northeast India with the rest of the country. As the only land link to the Northeast, it is considered very sensitive.
After arriving in Dhaka, General Mirza met with Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus and National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman, a clear indication of the strengthening relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus came to power in August 2024, Pakistan and Bangladesh’s defence relations have reached new heights. The fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government has removed all obstacles for the Pakistani military in Bangladesh.
Over the past 10 months, prominent Pakistani generals have made several visits to Dhaka. General Mirza’s visit is considered very important by the Bangladesh Army, which is actively seeking new defence partners, including Turkey and Pakistan. General Mirza’s meetings with his Bangladeshi counterparts are being kept highly confidential, but will certainly raise concerns within the Indian security establishment.
