Hopes for peace talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war seem to rise occasionally, but Vladimir Putin’s constant new demands are making the situation more complicated. Now, ahead of a proposed ceasefire plan backed by US President Donald Trump, Putin has added another condition. He is insisting that all arms supplies to Ukraine must be completely stopped. This demand has created fresh challenges for both Europe and the US. The big question now is whether this peace deal would actually benefit Ukraine or if the country will be forced to bow to Russia’s terms.
Ahead of a scheduled phone call between Trump and Putin on Tuesday, the Kremlin has made it clear that Russia will only agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine stops receiving military support altogether. According to sources, Putin has made this a non-negotiable condition for any peace agreement. However, European leaders have strongly opposed this demand. A senior European official warned that if this condition is accepted, Russia could use the ceasefire as an opportunity to reorganize its forces, while Ukraine would be left vulnerable.
Russia wants at least the US to stop providing military aid to Ukraine. However, Britain and the European Union are actively working on fresh arms supplies for Ukraine. This clearly shows that Western nations are not willing to easily accept Russia’s condition.
Last week, the US and Ukraine proposed a 30-day ceasefire during talks held in Saudi Arabia. At that time, the Trump administration had temporarily paused the supply of weapons and intelligence sharing with Ukraine to pressure them into negotiations. However, this suspension has now been lifted.
Donald Trump is willing to meet Vladimir Putin in an effort to end the Russia-Ukraine war. While the primary goal of this meeting is to negotiate a ceasefire, there are several hidden conditions tied to it. Russia wants Ukraine to be kept away from NATO and have its military strength and weapon capabilities significantly reduced.
This has raised concerns across Europe. Many fear that if the deal goes through, Ukraine could become even more vulnerable to future Russian attacks. Russia is also demanding a temporary halt on arms supplies, which would only be resumed after a peace agreement is signed. However, Ukraine still relies heavily on external support, producing only about 30 per cent of its required weapons domestically, while depending on foreign aid for the remaining 70 per cent.
