There are growing concerns about unrest in Bangladesh as tensions rise within the country’s military. General Wakar-uz-Zaman, who has been the army chief since 2024, is known as a balanced leader with a pro-India stance. On the other hand, Quartermaster General (QMG) Lieutenant General Mohammad Faizur Rahman is believed to have Islamist leanings and is seen as being supportive of Pakistan.
Reports surfaced earlier in 2025 claiming that Rahman had met with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. This meeting allegedly involved sharing sensitive information, further fueling tensions within the army. There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that Rahman attempted a coup, but it was unsuccessful.
General Zaman advocates for a military that avoids involvement in politics. He has stated that the interim government is unstable, and once stability is restored, the army should return to its barracks. Meanwhile, Rahman seems to favor a more active role for the military and is reportedly closer to Islamist groups and Pakistan’s ISI.
Fears of unrest in Bangladesh
The ongoing conflict within Bangladesh’s army has become a major concern for the country. People are worried that this internal strife could lead to unrest. Adding to these concerns, General Zaman has warned of a possible coup in Bangladesh. He stated that the country might fall under the influence of external forces and cautioned that if the situation doesn’t improve, the military may be forced to take control.
