Moscow: Vladimir Putin has slammed Muhammad Yunus over the alleged corruption accusations linked to the Rooppur nuclear power project in Bangladesh. In a significant statement, Russia’s nuclear energy agency, Rosatom, on Tuesday said that the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission’s comments were an “attempt to tarnish” the Rooppur nuclear power project.
In a statement, Rosatom reiterated that the USD 2.65 billion Rooppur project is transparent and that it is prepared to defend the case in court. These accusations were made by the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, which was formed after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh.
What did Rosatom say?
Rosatom stated in a statement, “Rosatom is committed to a policy of openness in all its projects and the principle of tackling corruption, maintaining a transparent procurement system. External audits regularly confirm the openness of the project’s business processes. Rosatom State Corporation is ready to defend its interests and reputation in court.”
Corrupt Bangladesh?
The Rosatom statement comes a day after the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission issued a statement accusing the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members, including her niece and UK MP Tulip Siddiq, of sending nearly USD 900 million to offshore entities in Malaysia.
